Creation or Evolution?
Consider the evidence before deciding

by E. Norbert Smith, Ph.D.

Creation of Adam

This is my latest and biggest book.  I have finished the final draft and it is currently being reviewed by several professional friends. It should be published later this year or early in 2009.  It is the culmination of my life’s work and ministry.  The draft is 450 pages and it has lots of pictures including some of my own research.  The book is dedicated to the fond memory of Dr. Henry Morris, author of The Genesis Flood, the book that changed my life.  Dr. Morris started the Creation Research Society and I served under his leadership as a member of the board of directors.  He also started the Institute for Creation research and I taught a graduate course when he was President.  The Foreword is written by Henry Morris’s son John, currently the President of the Institute for Creation Research.  Following is a brief description of each chapter.

Chapter 1: Early history of creation science introduces this important topic and puts it into historical perspective. Throughout history, many of the founding fathers of science had a deep abiding faith in the God of Creation and accepted the Biblical account of Creation is historical and scientific truth.

Chapter 2: Creation science today considers the current explosion of interest in creation science.  The impact of Dr. Henry Morris is considered in depth.  Many consider him the father of the modern scientific creation movement.

Chapters 3 and 4. Creation verses in the Old and New Testaments are the focal points of this endeavor.  It took over ten years to compile the scripture passage chapters.  I have attempted to list all scripture references in the Bible relating to creation.  Any topic mentioned in over five-hundred places can not be ignored.  Indeed, creation is central to the Christian faith.  Without the original perfect creation and subsequent fall into sin, there is not need for Jesus Christ as Savior.  These passages provide a great deal of information about Creation, but are primarily given so that we will lift our hearts and our hands in honor of our Creator for as the Psalmist said, The heavens declare the glory of God. (Psalms 19:1)

Chapter 5: God remains active in CreationMany Christians accept some form of theistic evolution and believe God directed or created the universe in the beginning, but is no longer active in that Creation today.  Scripture clearly shows in over 1,000 verses that God has remained active in Creation throughout history and remains so today.  And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. (Col 1:17, NKJ)

Chapter 6: Scientific evidences for creation.  Sadly, the overwhelming evidence supporting creation is ignored by most high school teachers and secular university professors even in many of our Christian universities.  Students and others must consider the many scientific evidences supporting the Flood and a creation.

Chapter 7: Science in the Bible highlights some of the many areas science is mentioned in the Bible.  Certainly, the Bible is important regarding spiritual matters but, if it is the inerrant inspired Word of the Living God, then where it touches on history or science, it must also be correct.  There are many profound insights into modern science in the Bible written thousands of years ago by people with no knowledge of modern science.

Chapter 8: Secular science and the Bible at war highlights some of the conflicts between modern secular science and the Bible.  Science is part of our God-given dominion over the earth, but like other gifts it has become tainted by the world and is often in conflict with portions of God’s inspired Word.  Professors in science classes, even at major Christian universities often dismiss the Biblical of Creation and the Flood as myth and say it is filled with errors and must not be taken literally.  Christians must be well grounded in Biblical truth and be prepared to defend their beliefs in an often hostile academic environment.  We live in a lost world and are commanded to be “salt and light.”

Chapter 9: Scientific evidence for evolution is weak, in spite of what we are repeatedly told by the media and in classrooms.  A discussion of some of the direct and indirect evidences used to support evolution is given.  In many cases the evidences is weak and involves circular reasoning.  False and even fraudulent data have been used in textbooks for decades and are exposed and discussed.

Chapter 10: Evolution in the twenty-first century examines the current state of affairs of evolution with admissions of some of its extreem and growing weaknesses by leading evolutionists. There has been a recent explosion in both the lingering lack of scientific  evidence supporting evolution and especially in the lack of objectivity when evolution is discussed.  It can be argued that evolution is held more as a relgion than a topic of science.

Chapter 11: Theistic evolution.  This is a difficult, but important chapter for it deals with a topic that is widely accepted in many Christian circles and by several Christian denominations and Bible seminaries. It seems many espouse this view without really understanding what is involved.  They do so without understanding what the Bible clearly states about this important issue.  There are many inherent dangers for individuals and denominations in their rejection of the clear account of Biblical Creation.

Chapter 12: Evolution as idolatry.  The idea that materialistic evolution is a modern form of idolatry is foreign to many.  Most Christians today see idolatry as something that occurred thousands of years ago and in others parts of the world. Yet we hear indirect reference to it repeatedly on PBS and other nature programs.  Nature natural selection are often said to be “creative” or “clever.”  Such traits, including reverence are given to the creature or more specifically to natural law instead of the Creator of all creatures including even all natural law.  The Apostle Paul gave this stern warning. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator-- who is forever praised. Amen (Rom 1:25, NIV).  That time is now.

Chapter 13: Intelligent design.  This intellectually acceptable viewpoint is growing in popularity and is based in large part on the inability of natural evolution to explain the origin of life and the many complex structures and functions found in living things.  It not motivated by scripture and appears to be less offensive to many in science compared to the older Biblical Creation arguments.  Such discussions have long been needed and many blind eyes are being opened.

Chapter 14: Societal influence of evolution.  There have been many hideous societal influences of evolution past and present.  The truth is not pretty.  Evolution was justification for the horrific Jewish death camps of Germany and for “death with dignity” arguments for euthanasia today.  It also plays a major role in the practice of abortion.  This may well be the most controversial chapter in the book, but I would be remiss to ignore the historical and current impact of evolution and have attempted to document the material presented.

Chapter 15: Implications for science.  If Creation is true and evolution is false there are many profound implications and applications both for science and for individuals.  Some of the implications of a Creation worldview and implications toward science are discussed.  Science has become a god to many in our world today, but all this changes if, in fact, God created our world.  In spite of what we have long been taught, scientists are often not at all objective.  All of us see the world through the tinted lens of our worldview, including scientists.  There is need for a major re-evaluation of science and science education.

Chapter 16: Implications for Christians provides an opportunity to address some of the implications Creation for Christians.  The ramifications are far-reaching and nothing could be of more importance.   If living things, including man, were not the result of random variation over time, this changes everything.  Souls hang in the balance for all eternity.  Morality is absolute and not open for discussion.  Sin is real, heaven and hell are real.  Judgment is unavoidable.  Indeed, if the Bible is true and the scientific evidence really does support Creation then truly everything changes.

Chapter 17: Christian persecution in America shows how dangerous it is today to question godless evolution.  Included are examples of highly qualified professors who have been denied tenure or fired for rejecting evolution.  For many, the stakes could not be higher.  This I know from personal experience, for the doors of academia slammed shut to me for doubting Saint Darwin.  I had few options and became an over the road truck driver.

Chapter 18: Does it really matter?  This final chapter is an attempt to share how resolving the origins issue is much more important than mere scientific speculation.  It is of eternal importance.  It can and must have a positive and lasting influence on people and on society.
